OBITUARY

MR. T. H. DAVEY 1 Per Press Association. ] CHRISTCHURCH, April 5. Obituary.—Mr. Thomas Henry Davcy» aged 78, Member of Parliament 1902 to 1914, and well known throughout the Dominion as a sportsman, journalist and educationist. He was born in Cornwall and arrived in New Zealand as a youth of 17. He was first employed by the Feilding Star. Later he came to Christchurch and joined the staff of the Star and Times and was for a time sporting editor of the Canterbury Times. He was a member of tho first council ol the New Zealand Trotting Association in 1889 and was the first stipendiary steward appointed by the association, retiring in 1928. He entered Parliament, first as one of the three members of the old city electorate and later was elected as Liberal member for Christchurch East. He also served on the Drainage Board, Charitable Aid Board, Tram Board and Canterbury College Board of Governors. Since his retirement he had taken an active interest in sport. His wife died 20 years ago.
