Newton, St. John’s Hill, and Aliss Newton, will leave today for the Tongariro River, where a wek will .be spent camping, and later they will go on to Taupo. Aliss Dorothy Hall, Campbell Street, and Aliss Connie Riley, leave at the week-end for the Waitomo Caves and Auckland. On Tuesday they will sail by the Monowai for a cruise round the Kauraki Gulf. Aliss Alary E. Campbell, a teacher of singing at the Conservatorium of Music, Alelbourne, arrived at Auckland this week. It was possible, she said, that the conservatorium would grant a scholarship to a New Zealand woman singer, tenable for one year. While m New Zealand Aliss Campbell will look out for possible talent. Miss Alcira Olive, the well-known Argentine woman dramatist, who has already made a mark as a playwright, has been appointed secretary to the Board of Education of Santa Fe. This is the first time in the history of the Argentine that a woman has received a position of this kind. The Friends’ School, Wanganui, offer a scholarship every year, which is extended if the pupil shows marked ability. It was won this year by James Wickham, grandson of Mrs. J. C. Wickham, a vice-president of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. This little boy has had to ride 10 miles to school each day and 10 miles home again. HITHER AND THITHER Musical Evening A number of friends were present at •a musical evening given recently by Aliss Alabel Mcßrearty. Among the pianoforte solos played by this musical young lady wore: “Besceuse” (Chopin), “Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2” (Liszt), “Polka de la Reino” (Raff), “Chopin Funeral March,” “The Wanderer” (Schubert-Liszt), “Prelude Raindrop” (Chopin), “The Blue Danube Waltz” (J. Strauss), “Serenade” (Schubert and others. Each item was played with great expression and much enjoyed by all present. Makohau School With the combined efforts of the school committee, Miss Bullen, the pupils and local residents, a very pleasant afternoon was spent on Wednesday last at Alakohau School, Turakina Valley, where the children held their breaking up concert and received their prizes. The children gav 0 a good display of folk dancing in Dutch fancy dress, songs, recitations, “The Three Bears,” with first and second scene of the play, “Abraham Lincoln.” Air. F. G. Bishop, chairman, presented the prizes. A lolly scramble and afternoon tea brought this happy gathering to a close.

Engagement The engagement is announced of Hazel Thelma, second daughter of Air. and Airs. John Winks, Raetihi, to Richard Gilles (Darby), eldest son of Air. and Airs. R. Black, Karioi. j Children’s Christmas Party A children’s Christmas party, organised by the committee of the junior j members of the Victoria League took place 0:1 Thursday afternoon in the Dengue rooms, which were gaily decorated for the occasion with festoons of coloured streamers, Chinese lanterns and a Christmas tree adorned with gifts, which were later distributed by a committee member. Numerous games were played and ice-creams served, and altogether the 20 small folk spent a very happy time. Afterwards they were given a “party” tea at a pret-tily-decorated table, and finally sent homo with sweets, trumpets and balloons. Airs. N. R. Bain, president of the Victoria League, provided the bags of sweets and distributed them, while Airs. A. H. Boyes (secretary), gave the trumpets and handed one to each child, and Aliss Gibbons provided the bal- 1 loons, which she presented as the chil- I dren wore leaving. This is an annual function arranged specially for children whose parents are not as fortunate as others, and the success of the kindly effort was largely attributed to th 0 good work of the junior committee members, Misses O. Ziesler (secretary), Margaret Smith, Alix Stachan, Alargaet Poole (who arranged th 0 games), Una Hine and Nancy Hales. Party for Bride-to-be A delightful gift afternoon was given by Airs, W. Caseley in honour of Aliss Grace Watson, who is shortly to be married. The guest of the afternoon wore a dainty frock of floral organdie, while Mrs. Caseley was attired in a black silk frock relieved with white. The beautiful grounds were bright with flowers and the guests spent a very enjoyable afternoon playing many games and competitions on the lawn. The gifts were many and useful. PALAIS DE DANSE To-night (Saturday) Xmas Eve, dancing will be held from 9 p.m. till 12 in the pleasant surroundings of the Druids’ Hall, by the Palais de Danse, where a programme of old-time and modern numbers has been arranged for the enjoyment of patrons.
