LIFE-SAVING

“SEAL OF SUCCESS.” CANTERBURY’S AFFILIATION. Tho fine work that had been done by the New Zealand Surf Association since its inception was commented upon by Mr. P. Coira, chairman of the association, at its recent first annual meeting. In particular, the work of the sub-committce in revising the competition drill was. ho said, deserving of the highest praise. Tho decision of the Canterbury Surf Association to affiliate with tho parent body was a step forward which filled them all with pleasure and hopes for a most successful year ahead, and if it was only possible to create a little more interest in surf work in the Hawke’s Bay district, then it could be truly said that the New Zealand Surf Association was a national organisation, covering tho whole of tho Dominion. The year had been a most successful one, and the association was looking forward to a successful meeting of tho clubs in tho national championships at Auckland. Tho keen interest displayed in surf work on the west coast of the South Island was remarked on in a report from the secretary (Mr. F. Chapman). There was every prospect of several more surf clubs being formed there this season. Notification was received from the Wellington and Wanganui associations that they had appointed Air. N. A. Ingram and Mr. W. H. Genie as their respective delegates. Air. Baird, of the Foxton Surf and Life-Saving Club, said that he desired to place the position of his club before the council., Tho club was under the impression that it could claim individual representation on tho association, and under that impression his club had instructed him to attend tho meeting. Tho Manawatu He-ad Centro of tho Royal Life-Saving Society was not at all active in surf work, and his club desired to bo linked up with the association as an individual unit. The president said that as soon as tho secretary of tho association returned the matter would bo dealt with. It was decided to communicate with the Alanawatu centre regarding the position. A letter from the Canterbury Surf Association, notifying its affiliation with the New Zealand Surf Assoeia tion was received with applause. Every member of tho council expressed his great pleasure at the contents of the letter, and felt that the crowning seal of success of the future of surf work in New Zealand had been placed by tho decision of the Canterbury Surf Association. Tho election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr. P. Coira; vice president, Air. W. H. Gorrie; hon. secretary, Mr. F. Chapman; hon. treasurer. Air. F. Chapman; hon. instructor inchief, Mr. J. F. Alcxnader; hon. medical adviser, Dr. .1. M. Twhigg; hon. solicitor, Mr. W. J. Beveridge hon. auditor, Air. P. Edwards; correspondence committee, Messrs. P. Coira, W. H. Gorrie, and F. Chapman.
