NUNNELEY CASKET WIN FOR WELLINGTON COMBINED TEAM DEFEATED. I Per Press Association. I WELLINGTON, Dec. 22. At the end of the first day’s play at Miramar in the Nunneley Casket competition between teams of women tennis players representing Wellington and tho combined Wangauui-Taranaki-Manawatu districts, Wellington led by four matches to two. The combined team won two singles of tho four singles and two doubles played. A strong and gusty northerly wind was blowing diagonally across tho court and made any sustained exhibition of good tennis quite impossible. Details of results are as follow, Wellington players being mentioned first: Singles. Miss D. Nicholls beat Miss M. Purcell, 6—o, 6—l. Miss D. Howe beat Miss M. Rutherford, 6 —3, 6—2. Miss M. Whisker lost to Miss I. Small, 6 —3, 4 —6, 4—6. Doubles Misses Nicholls and Howo beat Misses Purcell and Rutherford, 6—l, Misses Whyte and Whisker beat Mrs Adams and Miss Small, 6—3, 06, 6—4. WANGANUI ASSOCIATION NEW YEAR TOURNAMENT. Late entries for Wanganui Lawn Tennis Association’s New Year Tournament will bo accepted today at Hounscll’s Sports Depot or can be posted to the secretary, Box 234, Wan ganui. The date for receiving entries has been extended for one day, as it is felt that certain players have overlooked the fact that their entries should I have been sent in yesterday.
