THE ROYAL SHOW

FIXTURE IN AUCKLAND VERY LARGE. ENTRIES. AUCKLAND, Dec. 16. A tender of £798 by P. W. Peate for the erection of a new sheep pavilion at the Epsom Show Grounds for the Royal Show to be held in Auckland on February 8, 9 and 10, was accepted by the council of the Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association at a meeting yesterday. It was the lowest of 12 tenders, the highest of which was £ll9B. The pavilion will be 150 ft. by 39ft., and will contain 125 pens. The present sheep pavilion is to be converted to accommodate pigs, the work costing about £5O. In view of the phenomenal number of entries indicated in a report by the secretary, Mr. W. E. O’Donnell, it is almost certain that another sheep pen, estimated to cost £5OO, with temporary fittings, also will be required. This matter was referred to the finance committee, which was given power to act regarding the provision of all necessary accommodation. “The entries so far received have given us a fright, especially as entries do not close until next month,” remarked the president, Mr. S. Austin Carr. “We are bound to need considerable extra accommodation.” It was decided to make alterations to the cattle pens at a. cost of about £lBO. A proposal to erect a permanent building for tho accommodation of indoor exhibits and the luncheon room, estimated to cost £lBOO, was referred to the finance committee. It was stated that if provision were made for badminton courts, £lOO would bo guaranteed by Badminton clubs for the rental of them. Mr. O’Donnell said that a permanent building would save the hire of marquees at shows. Regret that he would be unable to attend the Royal Show was expressed by the Governor-General. Lord Bledisloe, in a letter from his official secretary, Sir Cecil Day. “His Excellency’s inability to be present at the Royal Show has caused him great disappontment, ” the letter stated. Approval of the granting of a holiday to school children on the second day of the show was signified in a letter from the Auckland Education Board. __________
