WATER POLO MATCH

REFEREE’S DECISION RULED WRONG. Air. John Hodgson, chairman of the International Water Polo Board, has stated his ruling on a problem raised by the Auckland Water Polo Control Board. According to this board, a referee in a match, owing to the misbehaviour of the crowd, terminated the game and awarded the decision to the team that was leading and appeared certain of winning had the game continued. Air. Hodgson, who is the New Zealand Council’s representative on the International Federation of Amateur Swimming, ruled: ‘‘ A referee has power to terminate play at any period if, in his opinion, the conduct of players or spectators prevents the match being brought to a proper conclusion. He has not the power to award the match to either side, no matter what the score. That decision can be taken only by the body promoting the match or competition.”
