INTERESTING METHODS

SYDNEY FATHER’S IDEAS. WOKTIIY OF EAI ULATION. Jim Kendall, well known Sydney sportsman, has some rather unusual ideas about swimming. For instance, he thinks that most promising young sters get too much of it and that a lad should bo carefully nursed along until he is at least 18 years old. This particular theory is applied to his son Bill. Dad had been coaching him since he was a little tadpole. He thought the lad had prospects, and when some years ago the Kendalls were in U.S.A. Dad got Johnny Weissmuller to give the lad the once over and some advice. Kendall - senr. must have been on the right track; the world’s champion must have given good advice; and Kendall junr. must have been the right material. For after the Kendalls returned to Sydney the lad won the under .12 years old State championship in record time. Since, then ho has not ’lone very much competitive swimming, but Kendall senr. has been assiduously coaching him, mainly at the Tattcrsall’s Club pool. Hero it is almost “part of the furniture” to see Kendall, now a fine strapping 17-year-old with tremendous legs, cover lap after lap, pushing a float and only using his legs. Thuswise he can go faster for 20 yards than quite a lot of first-class racers swimming normal fashion. That Kendall senr.’s methods have much to commend them and that the subject of his coaching has bright sprint possibilities was proved bv young Kendall’s swim in the East Sydney Club’s senior 50 yards handicap last Saturday. He clocked 23 3-ssecs., which equals the New’ South Wales record standing to the credit of A. Wickham, before the tidal water deleted from the record book. Those who know ATr. Kendall’s methods and his objective are interestedly awaiting young Kendall’s 18th rear.
