C. T. ULM’S EXPERIENCE CREW ON TASMAN FLIGHT NOTABLE ADVENTURES IN AIR An interesting fact not generally known about Air. C. T. Ulm is that he Holds more air flight records than Sir Charles Kingsford Smith. Two of the records, the transpacific ocean flight from America to Australia, and the Australia to New Zealand, are held in conjunction with Sir Charles. His full list is as follows:—Transpacific Ocean flight, Australia to New Zealand, Perth to Adelaide, Al el bourne to Perth, transAustralia (non-stop), Australia-Singa-pore, Australia-Karachi, England to India, London to Calcutta, England to ■Singapore, and England to Australia (total time, six days, 17 hours, 56 minutes). Having civil aviation experience of 13 years, during which he has spent more than 2500 hours in the air, Air. Ulm holds the ranks of Honorary Flight-Lieutenant in the R.A.A.F. and is a captain in the New Zealand Permanent Air Force Reserve. He holds a commercial pilot’s license for the following types: Tri-motor Avro-X, Bristol Fighter, Avro 504 K, D.H. Aloth, Puss Aloth, Avro Trainer, and others. In the laith in Australia Air. Ulm has already flown 19,400 miles. As organiser of the Australian National Airways, Ltd., he flew more than 1,000,000 miles in Australia alone. Air. Ulm holds the Air Force Cross and the Gold Afcdal of Honour—— League Internationale Aviatcurs. He is 36 years of age.

Mr. “Scotty” Allan. Air. G. U. (“Scotty”) Allan, Mr. Ulm’s relief pilot, is 33 years of age. He joined the Royal Flying Corps in 1918.] Too young for active service when he joined, Air. Allau was employed as “ferry” pilot bet wen England ami France, and later was a scout pilot. After the war ho remained in the Flying Corps until 1920, and then gained further experience in the Ford engineering works. In 1925 ho rejoined the R.A.F. and saw service in Iraq, India, and England, where he won the British night bombing championship in 1929. Then he was selected by Air. Ulm as senior pilot for Australia National Airways, Ltd., and in one year he flew 1540 hours. in 1931 he flew with Sir Charles Kingsford Smith to rescue the Imperial Airways mail ’plane forced down at Akyab (Burma). In all Mr. Allan made four crossings of the Timor Sea, and a year later accompanied Sir Charles Kingsford Smith o n tho air mail flight to England, when the ’plane established a commercial record of 12 days. In the same year he flew from Melbourne to Sourabaya with Hans Bertram. This year he has flown tho Aus-tralia-England route with Afr. L’Uu. Mr. R. B. Boulton. Mr. R. B. Boulton, radio operator of tho Faith in Australia, is 26 years of age. In 192 fl ho joined tho Royal Australian Air Force as a ground engineer, learning to fly two years later under the tutelage of the New South Wales Aero Club. In 1929 he joined Australian National Airways as engineer and junior pilot, and now holds engineering tickets and a commercial pilot’s license. In .1931 he accompanied Air. Allan on the Australian-England mail flight as far aS Alor Sta r. Since then ho, has bon a licensed ground engineer employed by A.N.A.

Time, 12hr. 15niin. 1933 (January 11) —Gerringong-Ncw Plymouth: 3-engined Folker monoplane Southern Cross. Air Commodore Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, Mr. p. G. Taylor, Air. J. W. R. Stannage (wireless operator), Afr. 8. E. Nielson, and Mr. J. Percival. Timo. 14hr. smin. Tho fast time sot by Mr. Guv Menzies still holds by a wide margin. Tn January, 1928, Afessrs. Hood and Atoncrieff, both of Now Zealand, made the first attempt nn tho Tasman crossing in a light single-engine-] machine, but wore lost. No trace of their machine, tho Aotoaron, has been found.

Ulin The airman has decided to fly back at the conclusion of tho tour of New Zealand. The place of taking off has not yet been decided.; Air. Ulm will prob ably fly to Napier on Wednesday. An official reception was tendered the “Faith in Australia” personnel this afternoon in tho presence of a largo gathering. A slight mishap occurred to a club aeroplane when attempting to take off to meet the “Faith in Australia.” A moth piloted by Air. Beau Shicl, with Air. T. Vincentt, movieman, as passenger, struck a bump and was slcwwi into a fence to avoid spectators. SligM damage was done to a wing ftnd th» prcpcllor.
