A MODERN MACHINE
GREAT FLYING RANGE. The Faith, in Australia is the largest monoplane in Australia. Originally one oi the Australian National Airways Fleet, it was reconstructed and enlarged at Cockatoo Island and fitted with three Wright Whirlwind J-6 engines, each developing 240 horse-power. Ten tanks, to hold a total of GUO gallons of spirit, are fitted into the wing; two, each holding 260 gallons ,in the cabin, and one under the pilots’ seats, to hold 110 gallons. Tho machine has a total capacity of 1240 gallons, giving a range of 3800 miles. This is the equivalent of throe crossings of the Tasman Bea between Australia and New Zealand without refuelling. It has a maximum speed of 126 miles an hour, and a cruising speed of 105 miles an hour. The registration letters of tho ’plane are VH-UXX, and it is equipped with long and short wave wireless and a full equipment of the latest flying and navigation instruments. The petrol tanks in the fuselage are so snaped as to give free access by a narrow “walk-way” between the cockpit ant* the wireless and navigation departments. This allows the pilots to take turns at resting in a specially prepared sleeping-bag which can be placed cither between the tanks or on the cabin floor.
