GOVERNOR OF BOMBAY
SIR F. SYKES’ RETIREMENT. WORK FOR DEPRESSED CLASSES. [British Official Wirelew.] Received Dec. 4, 6.20 p.m. RUGBY, Dec. 3. A notable tribute was paid to Sir Frederick Sykes, retiring Governor of Bombay, by the depressed classes. A deputation of 150 of them presented him with a farewell address in a silver casket, and displayed, genuine regret at his departure. Dr. Solanki, vice-chairman of the Depressed Classes’ Institute of India, read an address stating that the schemes launched by the Governor to bring about better health, enlightenment, and prosperity for tho villagers would be remembered with gratitude by the agriculturists and labouring classes. Tn reply, Sir Frederick said that the Government recognised the loyal support received from tho depressed classes and had done its best to bring about every possible improvement in their condition. The Governor reminded the deputation that it was their duty to do everything possible to change the attitude of class hostility, and win the respect and friendship of the other communities.
