TAIHAPE

CRICKET NOTES. Town defeated Country by 82 runs in a match played on the Oval Domain during tho week-end, and thus avenged the defeat which their country cousins inflicted upon them a short time ago. Town batted first and made 205 runs for eight wickets and then declared. Glennie, who is one of the best all rounders in Taihapc, was top scorer, with 85. His brilliant display was one of the outstanding features of the match, and he thoroughly deserved the applause which greeted him when he returned to the pavilion. His score included nine fours and 27 singles. Dr. Sinclair maintained the good form which he, has shown of lately and scored 48 before he. unfortunately, ran himself out. His tally included five fours and 27 singles. Town had lost six wickets for 66 runs, but the great stand made by Glennie and Dr. Sinclair who put on 138 runs for the seventh wicket altered the whole aspect of the game and gave town victory when defeat appeared to be staring them in the face. Glover batted attractively for his 25 runs, while Grove made 18 before being caught by Gordon off Afarsh.

Bowler’s contribution to Town’s score of 205, was 12. Country had a big task before them to overtake Town’s total, and a lot depended on Tom Lowry (who made 151 not out in the previous match between Town and Country). Lowry wont out; leg before wicket, to Glennie, when !;• had made 17, and the hopes of the Town team ros considerably. Afitchcll, who has a remarkably good eye, and shows distinct promise, was top s~orer for Country with 49 runs, including four sixes and two fours. W. Batlcv made a good stand and scored 27. inclding one four and six twos. Lowry, as already mentioned, made 17. None of the other batsmen reached double figures and Country were all out for 123 which was 82 less than Town’s score. Country batted .12 men. IDctails arc as follows: Town. Gower, c Alarsh, b J. Taihape and School used tho concrete pitch while Utiku and United used a grass pitch with matting on it. As the concrete pitch is in the centie of the recreation ground, Utiku and United, who played on a part of what is known as No. 2 football field in winter, near the bush, were rather cramped for space but nevertheless enjoyed their game very much. The reason for both matches being played on the Domain was because the Utiku Club aio putting down a concrete pitch at Utiku and it is not yet ready lor nlay. Not since tho days when Civil Service (captained by the laic Mr. W. Bennett) used to play have two cricket matches been played on the Oval Domain at the same time. Sho’.tiy before the start of the cricket match between town and country, which was played on the Oval Domain during the weekend, Jack Guilliard, Taihape’s champion cyclist, who was practising on the Domain, collided with W. G. Grove, a member of the town team. Guilliard and Grove bolt: received painful facia] injuries. On December 10 a special excursion train will run from Taihape to Taumarunui and back and members of various local sports clubs will play interchib matches with Taumaiuntil. Goliors, cricketers, bowlers and ten

nif players from Taihape will make the tr p, besides the general public. Members of the Taihape Golf Club who are available for the match against Taumarunui, are requested to not ily tho see rotary (Mr. A. P. Seccombe) immediately. The first swimming carnival of the season will be held on Friday next in the municipal baths. \ twilight sports meeting will be held on the Oval Domain before the carnival.
