GOLF. To-day will witness the official closing day of the Patea Golf Club, and,.competitions have been arranged in the usual manner to fitly bring to a close the season’s activities. The ladies will hold their own closing on Wednesday next, but to-day there will be mixed foursomes, approaching and putting competitions. During this past week there have been some excellent rounds carded. Miss L. Carey was also successful in holing in one at “The Lake” on Wed nosday during play in a bogey match. Her tee shot landed just off the green but ran on and finally rattle the tin. Several handicap reductions have also been recorded, these being Miss T. Gibson to 10; Miss C. Davidson to 31; and Miss B. Wybourne to 29. Miss N. Hurley, who won the senior championship and who has been playing consistently good golf during the season, won the bogey match on Wednesday ending one up after a particularly good round. The winners of the ladies’ championships are Miss N. Hurley (senior); Miss F. Power (junior); and Miss B. Peterson (C grade). In the men’s championships, the following were winners: N. Hunger (senior); R. Haddow (junior); while F. Naismith and W. Honeyfield have still to play off in the C grade. INFANTRY PLATOON. The Patea unit of the Taranaki Regiment and the Patea platoon of Queen Alexandra’s Mounted Rifles were inspected at Patea last night by Colonel F. Symon, C.M.G., D. 5.0., who was accompanied by Major A. E. Conway, N.Z.S.C., New Plymouth, and Lieutenant Henry, N.Z.S.C., Hawera. Rifle exorcises with landscape target and indication of lire control, together with Lewis gun work in action were carried out by the infantry platoon and Hotchkiss quick-firing gun work by the mounted men. The parade was under the command of Lieutenant R. W. Had dow. Colonel Symon stated I hat ho. was very favourably impressed with the excellent physique of the mon and their keenness, particularly in view of the comparatively recent formation of the infantry platoon. He referred to the forthcoming infantry camp at Waipukurau and the mounted camp at Waverley.
