CUSTOMS REVENUE

POSITION AT WANGANUI DECREASE DURING JULY COMPARISON OF FIGURES. The duty and tax collected at Wan ganui during July decreased by £1442 14s 6d as compared with the amount collected during tho same month last year. Customs revenue, tyre tax and petrol duty, all showed a de,crease, beer duty being the only exception and showing a slight increase. The decrease was, however, offset by the collection of sales tax, which amounted during rhe month to £1584 5s Bd. Customs returns for the seven months ending July still show a slight increase, amounting to £1247 Is, as compared with the same period last year. Th?, figures for each month of the current year, and those for the corresponding months of J 932 arc as follows:

Increase, £1247 Is. Beer Duty. Beer duty collected during July, 1.933, shows a- slight increase over that collected during July, 1932. A sum of £371 5s was paid in during tho past month, as compared with £262 13s 7d during July, .1932. an increase of £lO3 Us sd. Over the seven months ended July, 1933, tho total shows a decrease of £29 17s 2d, as compared with that collected during the same period last year. The monthly totals are given below: —

Tyre Tax. A decline of £lO9 16s in tyie tax is shown in tho return of last month as compared with July, 1932, while for the seven-months’ period the decrease is £753 17s. Tho total collected for the first seven months of 1932 totalled !£2199 9s as against £1355 12s for the same period this year. Last month’s figures, however, show an increase on June and May of this year. The figures are tabulated for each month of both

Decrease, £753 17s. Petrol Tax. Nearly half the total of petrol tax was paid in during July, J 933, as against July, 1932, the totals being £643 3s 6d and £1154 9s. a decrease of £5OB 9s. Despite this drop the figures still show an increase over the first seven months of 1932, chiefly on account of no tax being paid in January, 1932. Figures are as follows:- •

Less Sales Tax. Less sales tax was collected at Wanganui during July, 1933, than June, the decrease being £1(54 Us 7d. Jt will be noted in the tabulated figures below that the April total greatly exceeded that of any other month. The tax was first, levied during a portion of February, but collections from wholesalers were not made until April; hence the increase in the total for that month.
