TO BE RETAINED
VOLUNTEER SYSTEM. A RUMOUR (DISCOUNTED. WELLINGTON, July 31. Associated with the recent reports of a complete reorganisation of the New Zealand defence forces has been a rumour that the Territorial system, with compulsory parades, would again be instituted. In an interview, the Alinister of Defence (the Hon. J. G. Cobbe) repudiated any such suggestion. “Certainly not, on my part,” leclared the Alinister when it was suggested that the volunteer system might shortly disappear. “There is no reason for such a change,” he continued. “Recruiting has been extremely satsi factory. I gave details of the position some weeks ago, and since then a small increase in recruits has been reported. As a matter of fact, we have some corps up to full numbers, and there is one instance in the South Island where they have twenty men on a waiting list. We are quite satisfied with the system, and the possibility of doing away with it has not been thought of by the Government.”
