RUGBY FOOTBALL JUNIORS TO PLAY RUAPEHU The following junior team has been chosen to represent Taihape agaiusi Ruapehu at Raetihi on Saturday, August 5: Full-back, B. Chase (Huiaj, three-quarters, T. Gilbert (Hiwera), Johansen (Utiku), Casey (Hautapu;; live-eighths, Elder (Huia), Woodhea'l (Hiwera) capt.; half-back, Raukawa (Huimai); forwards, Dickson (Utiku), Beiliss (Hautapu), Nicholson (Hautapu), Clinton (Hiwera), Freeman (Utiku), Carrington (Hautapu), Tali (Utiku), Johnson (Pirates). Reserves: Backs, Esler (Hautapu), Barrell (Utiku); forwards, Maclean. Owing to an injury sustained last Saturday, Carrington will be unable to play and will be replaced by Maclean. CHARITY BALL Everyone is looking forward tu to morrow (Wednesday) night and the Charity Ball, which promises to be the most popular dance of the season. The committee has the arrangements well in hand and a record crowd is expected, as tickets are selling fast. A novelty idea to decide who will have precedence to supper will provide some lun for any interested to try their luck on the “ totalisator.” The ladies’coin inittec has made arrangements for a plentiful supper and a real joy night is promised to all for half a crown. GENERAL NEWS Mr. Arthur Williams passed away at his residence in Kuku Street, Taihape, on Sunday at the age of 82 years. He was one of Taihape’s oldest residents and sincere and widespread regret will be felt at his passing. The funeral will be held this afternoon (Tuesday), at 2 o’clock. On Monday morning the staff of the Taihape District High School bid farewell to Miss C. L. Duncan, relieving secondary assistant, and made her a small presentation. The presentation ■ was made by the headmaster, Mr. A. 11. Denne, who referred to the happy relations existing between Miss Duncan and the other members of the staff and added that she would be greatly missed. Mr. D. Kelly spoke in a similar strain. Miss Duncan returned thanks in a neat little speech. Mr. J. Schulze has been appointed to succeed Miss Duncan and commences his new duties today. The Presbyterian Church gave a social evening in the Presbyterian Hall on Friday in honour of Miss M. Wilkie on the eve of her marriage. During an interval Rev. L. T. King, on behalf of the members of the church, presented Miss Wilkie with a beauti ful crystal bowl. Mr. King made reference to Miss Wilkie’s work in the interests of the Presbyterian Church and wished her every success and happiness in her married life. Mr. E. R. Fannin responded on behalf of Miss Wilkie. During the weekend Miss Wilkie was the recipient of a Bible from the Presbyterian Sunday School as a mark of esteem and appreciation of her work as a teacher at the Sunday School. The Majestic juvenile entertainers gave a performance at all three sessions at the Majestic Theatre on •Saturday and added considerably to the pleasure of patrons. MAJESTIC THEATRE i “The Mummy,” a sensational pic turo based on the Egyptian cult of reincarnation, conies to the Majestic to-night (Tuesday). It is in no way a “horror” play, but is a marvellous effort based on historical fact. Kailoff, as “The Mummy,” is amazing, and his make-up will not be soon for gotten. With him are Zita Johann, the famous Hungarian actress, and David Manners.
