Whyte Handicap Runners.

Tho Whyte Handicap on Tuesday was a Hawke’s Bay race, for Curie, and Lady Spy cut out most of the run ning, ami it was only in the last hundred yards that All Humbug, the favourite, split tho pair. Curio hung on nicely and it is now obvious that he was caught below his best at Hastings and Napier. Lady Spy ran her best race to date, while All Humbug should win a good race early. The. unlucky runner in the Whyte Handicap was Protomint, who, together with Stanchion (outside a hurdle), and Gibraltar were caught flat-footed at the rise of the barrier ami lost sov eral lengths. After this incident Protomint ran brilliantly, being sixth without being unduly bustled over the last bit. If he could only be depended upon

at the barrier he would nearly win the Parliamentary Handicap. Cylinder was noticed running on, and so was Scatown. Ida Alerting won the Te Aro Handicap too easily to make allowances for any of the others. She was always prominent and easily held her own in the run up the long straight. Swift and Sure was handy throughout and was unlucky in catching the winner at tho top of her form. Heather Glow was a good third, ami with a better run might have finished closer. High Speed surprised by finishing fourth, and Shootist also went well. The favourite, West Tor, made a short-lived effort at the home turn. L. G. Morris added to his remarkable percentage of -winning rides. Yesterday he had four mounts. He won two races (on Ida Merling and Beacon Fire) and was second tv. ice (on Pladie and All Humbug).
