Tariff Truce
J THE OBJECT EXPLAINED AIMED AT NEW INCREASES (By Telegraph - Press Association—Copyright) Received May 16, .11.5 p.m. LONDON, May 16. Ln the House of Commons, referring to the proposed tariff truce, Mr. Neville Chamberlain said that the object was to discourage the starting of new upward initiatives and was not intended ' to prevent the completion of operations already begun. The Import Duties Advisory Com- ■ mittce would continue to perform its statutory obligations, including the receipt and examination of applications for alterations in duties, but the Government, during the truce, would refrain from increasing customs duties with respect to applications not rer ceived before May 12. He- mentioned ’ an application regarding silk duties made before May 12. BRITISH TRADE NORWAY AND SWEDEN AGREEMENTS SIGNED t e Received Mav 16, 11.45 p.m. 3 LONDON, May 16. Trade agreements with Norway and 2 Sweden have been signed by the - British Government. h The Daily Telegraph understands c that Norway has undertaken to take r 70 per cent, of her coal from Britain, i and Sweden 48 per cent. Thus tlx r British export has been Increased by 1.500,000 tons a year, compared with 1931. The Swedish agreement also provides for the increased importation of British steel, while the duty on Swedish wrapping paper has been substantially reduced.
