At tho Wanganui County Council meeting yesterday the chairman (Cr. D. He said that the principle behind amalgamation was the saving of expense, but according to tho return placed before tho conference tho Rangitikei County, which was the largest in the group was costing more to administer than any. Ono of the •chief points made at the conference, he said, was that, it would bo quite a good thing to do away with rabbit boards and drainage boards and let the counties take over that. work. It was pointed out that the small boroughs and town districts were nearly all finding it hard to keep up the standard of maintenance required and buy machinery, and it was suggested that the work could bo done by tho coupties without much extra cost.' But the Vhief stumbling block so far as taking in those town districts was concerned was their indebtedness. Ono gentleman at the conference had pointed out that tho balance-sheets of tho ebuntios along this compared favourably with any local body in New Zen la nd and the conference seemed agreed that the counties here wore of just the right size to be administered bv a clerk and an engineer. Amalgamation was not instilled on tho score that expense would be saved.
