BULLS

R.S.A. SOCIAL. The Bulls sub-branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association held '-aclal evening in the Town Hall supper .oom on Wednesday evening, and there was a good attendance of members, as well as several visitors from Palmerston North, Marton and other centres. Mr. W. A. Churchill, president of the Bulls branch, was in the chair, and was supported by Colonel Powlcs, C.M.G., D. 5.0., Captain Mitchell, Padre Lane, Mr. B. J. Jacobs, Dominion vice president, and Mr. J. Campion (hon. secretary). Apologies were read from Messrs. J. Linklater, M.P., G. B. Gregory, 0. H. Grut, J. M. Croucher, J. Currie, L. Hill and R. O. Dalrymple. Before the programme commenced the chairman referred to the loss of an old comrade. Mr. Horace Wilson, and as a mark of respect all stood in silence. Mr. Churchill welcomed Mr. Jacobs, and said that it was an honour to have a Dominion vice-president in their midst.

The toast list was as follows:—“The King,” proposed by Colonel Powles; “The N.Z.R.5.A.,” coupled with the name of Mr. Jacobs, proposed by Mr. J. Campion; “The Ladies,’’ proposed by Mr. H. H. C. Holland, and responded to by Mr. M. Anderson; and “The Press,” proposed by Mr. W. A. Churchill. The roll call was responded to as follows:—Auckland Mounteds, 1; Wellington Mounteds, 3; New Zealand Field Artillery, 3; Auckland Infantry, 2; Wellington Infantry, 7; Canterbury Infantry, 1; New Zealand Machine Gunners, 1; New Zealand Cyclists’ Corps, 1; Engineers, 2; Medical Corps, 2; New Zealand Rifle Brigade, S; Imperial Forces, 1; South African veterans, 1. In responding to the toast of the N.Z.R.S.A. Mr. Jacobs thanked them for their invitation to be present, and spoke of the high achievements of the association. What they had failed to achieve was very small indeed, he added, and the objectives which they had failed to achieve had been due to changes amongst the powers that be, over which they had no control. The association had the support of the leaders of all parties in New Zealand. The association was having a wonderful time, the greatest enthusiasm being shown, particularly by the smaller branches. The Bulls sub-branch has direc" representation through the Marton centre, and remits from smaller centres would be dealt with by the parent body. No institution could boast a record such as the R.S.A., and 95 per cent, of the work was being done for nonmembers. It was pleasing to see the increase in membership in Rangitikei and Manawatu. He urged all to extend any benefits possible to ex-servicemen, whether members of the association or not. The idea of the association was to assist all, and by doing this they would earn the respect of the community at large. The public would then learn that where need exists help was being given, and public support would be forthcoming. He detailed the financial assistance given, and thanked the public for their help. The funds were being handled judiciously for the good of all ex-servicemen.

Colonel Powles expressed gratitude to Digger Jacobs for explaining the work of the association, and added that the observance of Anzac Day brought Home to the community the sacrifices which had been made, and a pleasing feature of the gathering had been the attendance of so many young people. Mr. Churchill thanked Colonel Powles for his fine address given on Anzac Day. Musical items were given by Messrs. Chapman Bros., W. A. Sutherland, H. H. C. Holland and B. J. Jacobs, and Mr. C. H Edwards presided at the piano. A very enjoyable gathering concluded with Auld Lang Syne and the National Anthem. The chairman announced that a ladies’ evening would be held on June 21. RUGBY.
