TOO MUCH POLITICS

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PA L MEBSTON MEMBERSHIP PALMERSTON N., May 11. The fact that it did not receive more support from the business community of the city was deplored by the council of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce last night, when it was decided to take steps to plan a policy for the future and to endeavour to secure more members. The proposal arose out of a discussion of the finances and membership of the association. Expressing regret that the membership was not bigger, Mr R. L. C. Aitchison asked: “Is it that we have been bordering too close in the past on polities?” Mr A. J. Graham: Hard times. Voices: Both. Mr 11. E. Townshend expressed the view that it was the fault of the chamber itself that it did not get.more support. “I think we have been trespassing oa politics,” Mr W. G. Black stated, “and have antagonised some who would otherwise have supported us. I think that if we toncentrato on matters that concern the business community in this area, we would get more support. ’ ’ The secretary (Mr W. McKenzie) commented that the association’s attitude in regard to the Public Service Association had done the chamber more harm than anything else. Mr A. P. Stuart: I think we are all to blame. We don’t initiate enough. There are plenty of things that we could discuss for the good of the dis--1 riot. * 1 There is a general lack of information at our meetings, and I am positive that we don’t know what we are talking about,” commented Mr Townshend. There should bo somebody, he added, who could explain the. proposals that came before the council. Mr Edmunds moved that a special meeting should be held to consider a policy for the- future and to suggest means of putting the chamber in the position it should be. This was agreed to.
