Mr. MacEntcc, introducing tho Budget, foreshadowed a surplus of £16,009. He claimed that Ireland was unique among the nations in extinguishing its floating debt and reducing unemployi mont. The reduction of externa! trade owing to British duties has been more than offset by the extraordinary expansion of domestic commerce. The Free •State ha<l rid itself of a burden of £92,000,000 unjustifiably imposed by a secret agreement with Britain in 1923. There had been no drying up of revenue, which exceeded the estimates in almost every significant items. Numerous tariff increases include a twofifths of a penny duty on imported daily newspapers. Mr. Cosgrave said that trade had contracted 25 per cent. The economic war would apparently continue for all time.
