MISS SARAH E. BREWER The death of Miss Sarah Etho! Brewer, which occurred at Wanganui yesterday, removes a figure that was familiar to this centre for many years. There are scores of Wanganui people who, when they read of her passing, will £ast memo tics back to the dancing of other days, b.’ie promoted a popular dancing class in Wanganui for many years. The Fire Brigado Hail,. n< w the City Council Chambers, was a popular rendezvous tor dancers right up until the war period every Thursday night, when the young people j gathered to enjoy themselves under r Misi. Brewer’s tuition. The dancing then and the dancing of to-day arc two different things. In those cays the Lancers nad some lifo in them and wore a feature of any dan'e programme. Mention of Mia« Brewer’s name will bring them all back agu-n in memory. How the ladies and gcat’emen, at a certain stage, would “gallop” round the hall, meet again and triumphantly bring a stirring dance to a close. In her late* years Miss Brewer did not always ap prove of the “galloping,” and ths Fire Brigade Hall nas often resounded to the shriek of her silver whistle which she used to carry to bring tho music to a stop. She would then admonish the boisterous. Those were tho good old days. Towaids tho end or ncr career as a dancing mistress Alias Brewer saw tho Giwt War develop, and many of her spec. al long night dances, held once a month were more or less farewells to boys going overseas with the New Zcnlrnd reinforcements. Alnny a lad danced happily for tno last time in WangsDui and said a last good-bye before marching off to join the Colours. Their faces come fleeting back to memory with the recollection of a dancing mistress who was loved j|T by thorn all, and who has gone to join them in the ranks of “Tho Deathless Armv. ”
