REPERTORY THEATRE

MOVEMENT STARTED IN WANGANUI A representative meeting of thofl interested in the formation of a Reper« lory Theatre Society met in Mesar* Silk, Haworth’s board room last evening, the attendance reaching nearlj > fifty. Air. H. C. Jenkins, president oi 1 the Wanganui branch of the Britislß Ui-Gina was elected to clair. A provisional committee was set up ay follows: Messrs. H. C. Jenkins ('hairman), A. Kitchen, C. P. Brown, N. Dallas, Paqualin. I. For long (secretary), Mrs, U. Williams, Mrs. R. E. Cuthbertson, Mrs. S. Rankin, Mrs. Hall, Misses N. Hales, M. Peck, G. Gamman and Stone, and is to function until the membership of the society is enrolled, when tho members will be called together in general meeting to elect the officers. Mr. Eric Forlong accepted the position of secretary, pro tom. It was decided to arrange for tho performance of throe programmes each year, subscribers and active members being entitled to two scats at each performance. The suoocription was fixed at 15s annually. With a view to discovering talent among the active mcmoers, club nights are to be arranged whereat members will rend various plays. .The first club night is to bo held in the Women’s Division Rooms on Thursday evening, Alr.y 24, when several one-act plays will be read. The first programme event will bo a modern comedy. Members undertook to enrol subscribers, and Mr. C. Palmer Brown acceded to the request that his office would accept subscription on the society’s behalf. One of the ways in which help can be afforded the new society is by lending to. the society copies of any pl*ys that are available. The co operation of other Repertory societies is being enlisted and the initial stages of tho society will, it appears, bo negotiated without any considerable expense.
