LONDON SALES OPEN EXCITED COMPETITION. Received Mav 10, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, May 9. The March scries of wool sales has opened. At total of 9337 bales was offered, including 4039 New Zealand, and about 4472 bales were sold. There was but a poor selection of merinos, but a representative offering of crossbreds. Attendance of buyers crowded the exchange, and competition was general and excited. Tho Home trade was bidding keenly for crossbreds. Prices were advanced when comparison was made with March closing rates a s follows: Merinos, greasy, 7| to 10 per cent.; scoureds, 7| per cent.; crossbreds, fine, 7| to 10 per cent.; medium, 71 per cent.; coarse, 5 per cent. Slipes increased 5 to 10 per cent. Greasy crossebred from New Zealand, “SJC,” sold at BJd highest to 7|d average; half bred, “Barrosa,” 17Jd highest, average 15$d; half bred lamb slipe, “Belfast,” Hid highest, 11 5-8 d average. Messrs. Murray, Roberts and Co., Ltd., arc in receipt of the following wool market cablegram from their London agents, dated May 9: —Sales have opened with a good tone. Competition keen. AH sections operating free y. Compared with last London sale’s closing rates, greasy Merino advanced' 74 to 10 per cent.; scoured Merino. none offered; crossbred greasy fine, advanced 7i per cent.; crossbred gret»sy medium and coarse except inferior descriptions, advanced 5 to 74 per cent.; crossbred scoured advanced 5 per cent.; slipe crossbred advanced 5 to 7| per cent.

Messrs. Levin and Co., Ltd., have received the following cable from their London agents, dated May 9: —The auctions opened here to-day with a large attendance of Home and Continental buyers. Competition was spirited. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, advise they have received the following cable from their London office, under date May 9:—There was a good attendance at the opening of the sales to-day. The, opening catalogues were fairly representative and competition by Home and Continental buyers was active. Prices, as compared with the close of the preceding series ruled: Crossbred slipe, id per lb. higher; medium greasy crossbred and coarse greasy crossbred, 4d per lb. higher; scoured crossbred, id to Id per lb. higher; greasy Merino, Id per It higher. ■ AUSTRALIAN TURNOVER INCREASE ON LAST YEAR. Received May In, 5.5 p.m. SYDNEY, May 10. Th© Commonwealth wool sales to the end of April represented a turnover of £30,060,192, compared with £27,289,447 during the first ten months of last season. The sales totalled 2,665.615 bales compared with 2,435,058 .last season. The average price for greasy wool was £ll 4s 2d per bale or 8.65 d per lb, compared with averages of £ll 3s 5d per bale and 8.6 d per lb last season.
