W.D.F.U.

SOCIAL EVENING The residence of Mrs Bignell, Wangaehu, presented a festive appearance on Saturday, May 6, when a social evening was held in honour of Mrs J. D. Aitken, a member of the W.D.F.U., who is leaving the district. The rooms were tastefully decorated with treeferns and festooned with tho division’s colours, while nice warm fires proved very cheery on a cold night. Dancing was indulged in in the drawing room, the music being supplied by Mrs Smith, Mrs W. Baldwin, and Mr Aitken.

Songs were given by Mrs Baldwin, Mr Bignell, and Mr Aitken; piano solos, by Mrs Smith, and recitations by Mrs Wilkie. Accompaniments were played by Mrs Smith. A “motor-car” competition, arranged by Miss D. Castles, was won by Mr Aitken.

A bountiful supper, provided by members of the division, was served in the dining room. After supper, a posy was presented to Mrs Aitken by little Valerie Bignell. Miss Baker, president of the branch, referring to the work Mrs Aitken had done as secretary and advisory member, presented her with a handsome handbag, and conveyed the best wishes of members.

Mrs Aitken feelingly replied, saving that anything she had done had been a pleasure, and that the social part of the work had been a help to her as well as to others. Mr Aitken also thanked the division, and expressed the hope that he and Mrs Aitken would have the pleasure of meeting the Wangachu people. This was responded to by the sinking of “For They Are Jollv Good Follows.” Three hearty cheers wore given for Air and Mrs Bignell. and a memorable evening closed with the sinking of “Auld Lang Sync’’ and the National Anthem.
