Canterbury’s Surplus.
According to the annual report of the Canterbury Jockey Club, a satisfactory result of tho year’s operations is something of which tho committee may be proud. After tho practice of rigid economy there is an excess of receipts over payments of £2280. No mention is made, however, of the sacrifices made by owners and trainers in the direction of racing for much smaller stakes than should be the rule. Recognition of this aspect of the position should always be made by racing clubs. Back in the Game. Mr. J. O’Driscoll is back in the game again, report “Hurry On.” He recently purchased a rising three-year-old gelding by Potoa from Senyora from the Bell Block breeder Mr. John Gleeson. Being by Potoa. the sire of Paonui, a Great Northern Hurdles winner from the dam of tho useful southerner Morena, he should certainly make good at the jumping game. At present he is being handled by R. Barlow, and it may bo some time before his owner takes charge of him. Mr. O’Driscoll is a good trainer of jumpers, and it will not bo long before he puts his latest purchase over the small fences.
