DONATIONS TO A CITY
ALDERMAN’S FINE GIFTS. Famous in Sheffield fur his gifts to the public, Aiderman J. G. Greaves recently presented 450 acres of moorland, known as Blacka Moor, near Fox House, on the outskirts of the city, on condition that the Sheffield Corporation keep it as it is but with the necessary woodland footpaths. The presentation of Blacka Moor brings the total area of Mr. Grace’s gifts of land sto the city up to 1100 acres. Apart from these presents he recently contributed £30,000 to the new .Sheffield Art Gallery and £lO.OOO to the Uourtauld Art Institution. Two of the city’s latest parks, Graves Park, the largest in Sheffield, and Concord Park, were the gifts of Mr. Graves, in addition to several small recreation grounds. Blacka Moor was formerly part of the Longshaw Lodge Estate. When the estate was broken up, Houndkirk Moor and Burbage Moor were bought by Sheffield Corporation ami the centre of the estate was bought by the National Trust. Consequently the gift to Sheffield of Blacka Moor, surrounded as it is by publicly-owned laud, will preserve a great open space of moorland for the people of the city.
