TARIFF TRUCE PROPOSED
SOME NATIONS ACCEPT IT. WASHINGTON, May 8. The unqualified agreement of Belgium to a tariff truce as proposed by the United States was announced today by the Under-Secretary (Mr. William Phillips) after a conference with the Belgian representatives at the St..tc Department. The Belgian action was made known as the United States renewed its efforts to obtain Britain’s agreement to the truce. France has accepted with reservations while Japan has indicated that it would do likewise. Dr. Halmar Schacht (German representative) in the White House conversations, has asserted that Germany will join in the plan. China is the seventh country to enter tho conversations through a special representative who took an active part to-day with Mr. T. V. Soong (Finance Minister) who is lunching with the President, beginning the talks thereafter.
