AVIATION IN WANGANUI

AERO CLUB’S ANNUAL BEPOBT “During the past year further pro gress has been made in local aviation, and 16 pupils have been successful in securing their pilot’s certificates. A good deal of cross country flying has been carried out, and it is this type of flying that the club is desirous of fostering,” states the annual report of the Wanganui Aero Club, to be preranted at the annual meeting on Mondav night. “Further great improvements have been effected since our last annual meeting, the Wanganui City Council having employed a number of the unemployed on this work, and the extension of the landing ground on the sea side is being carried on. When the sand ridge, at present being worked, has been removed it is going to make the landing ground one of the best in the country. The club is in .! -bted to Mr. J. S. L. Deem, the conn oil’s engineer, for the great interest he is still taking in this work. “The lease of the hangar site from the Wanganui Citv Council has now been completed. The lease is renewable and known as a Glasgow lease, and comprises two aer<*s. “The balance-sheet shows a loss for the year of £lO3 5s lOd. but it will be noted that during the past twelve months wo have paid £65 to the Wanganui City Council for ground rent, this representing two and a-hnlf wars’ rent, and we have also paid to the council the proportion agreed upon for legalising and fencing the Airport the Sum of £125 This item, of course, honld have been naid two vears ago. and if these two items are taken into consideration it will be seen there was a surplus for the year. “It is disappointing to note that the membershin fees for the year are slightlv less than the previous year, and considerable improvement is looked for. The times which are being experienced no doubt accounts for no increase in the number of our members. but as soon as there is anv sign of the depression passing away, an active canvass should bo made to intrease our membershin.”
