IDLE AND DISORDERLY. Arthur Howard, aged 42 years, appeared before Mr. W. H. Fookes, J.P., at the Taihape Magistrate’s Court yesterday, charged with being an idle and disorderly person with no lawful visible means of support. Sergeant Joyce told the Court that accused had been hanging round the town for tho past fortnight, and answered to tho description of a man wanted in Palmerston North >on acharge of false pretences. He asked that accused be remanded to appear at Palmerston North at 10 a.m. on May 9. The application was granted. AMATEUR ATHLETICS. A meeting of the executive committee of the Taihape Amateur Athletic Club was held on Friday evening. The secretary submitted a balance-sheet showing that the profit on the last meeting amounted to £8 15s 4d. A statement showing the income and expenditure for the season was presented and showed receipts £B4 14s 5d and expenditure totalling £79 3s 7d, leaving a credit balance of £5 10s lOd to carry forward. The meeting expressed staisfaction at tho fine financial result of the season’s operations. The question of raising funds by means of social functions during the winter months, for improvements to the tracks, was held over for future consideration. It was decided to hold a series of three road races, the first one to be held on May 18, entries to close on May 13. The entry fee was fixed at sixpence, with a minimum of six entries. GENERAL NEWS. A gift evening in honour of Miss Etta Spooner was held in the Parish Hall on Saturday, tho hostesses being Mesdames W. H. Fookes, D. Neagle, Misses M. Fookes, E. Wilmot, D. Mortland. The evening was spent chiefly in dancing, music being supplied by Messrs. F. Andrews. I. Parkes, and J. P. Mortland (violin), in addition to that provided by a gramophone. During an interval Mr. W. H. Fookes, in the course of a speech appropriate to the occasion, paid a high tribute to Miss Spooner’s popularity and many fine qualities, and wished her and Mr. L. Bradley every success and happiness in their married life. Mr. Bradley suitably responded. Miss Spooner received a very fine collection of gifts and there was much excitement when she opened the various parcels. Among those present were the following: Mesdames Fookes, Neagle, A. McKenzie, Ollivcr, Gudsell, Strachn; Misses Spooner (4), Harding, Cousins, Fookes, Anderson, de Lautour, Sexton (2), Casey, Dymock, O’Donoghue, Carter, Duncan, Gregory, Stupplcs, Somerville, Webster, McKenzie (Auckland), Durrant, Bradley, Joblin, Wilmot, Hamill, Mortland; Messrs. Spooner (3), Dymock, Sexton, Hamill, Joblin, Andrews, Parkes, Windle, Cleaver, O’Callaghan, Mortland, Leahy, Anderson, Fookes (2), Durrant, Findlay, Box, Bradley (2), Gudsell, Richards. Chisholm, McKinnon, Aldridge, Bayne, Ollivcr, Kiely. MAJESTIC THEATRE. “SKY DEVILS.” “Sky Devils,” which is a sensational and spectacular comedy sequel to “Hell’s Angels,” will bo shown at the Majestic to-night and to-morrow night at 8 o’clock, and also at a special matinee to-morrow afternoon at 3.30 o’clock. Spencer Tracy, William Boyd, and Ann Dvorak play the lending parts. The most dangerous stunt, flying ever recorded by a camera is woven into this comedy that will keep you laughing from start to finish. If you enjoyed “Hell’s Angels”—and who didn’t? — you will enjoy “Sky, Devils” just as mtifih.
