GOLF
SIZE OF HOLES OPPOSITION TO INCREASE. Gene Sarazen, holder of the British and American open golf titles, and the outstanding golfer of the day, is reported to have stated that the golf hole might, with advantage, be widened from 44in. to Sin. His idea was recently tried out in a tournament at Brentwood Country' Club, the home club of Olin Dutra, the reigning American professional champion. Dutra was round in 6f—3o and 36—with 28 putts, but the best putting was done by a 4 handicap amateur, who required only 24 shots on the greens in a gross round of 67. Dutra said that a larger cup — say, sin. or 6in.—would be all right, but not Sin. Bobby Jones disagrees with Sarazen’s suggestion for an Bin. hole. He sail' it might be interesting, but it would not be golf. Walter Hagen ’s remarks some years ago about the larger hole were worth quoting: “With a 6in. or an Sin. hole balls hit hard enough to go across the green and into a pot on the other side would often be gobbled by this big hole. In any case the poor putter would benefit very little, because his ill-hit putts nearly always stop short of the cup, and -o a hole as big as a bucket would be little use to him. ’ -
