LADIES’ COMPETITION

SUCCESS OF UNITED CLUBDR AW FOR NEXT SATURDAY. The ladies’ cricket competition was advanced a further stage us a result of Saturday’s play, and the concluding scries of matches will be played next Saturday, the draw being as follows: — Woolworth’s v. Haydon's B; D.I.C. v. Uarakino; United v. Southern Cross; Woollen Mills v. Girls’ College; Haydon’s A a bye. Having a lead of eleven points at the present stage of the competition, United are in an unassailable position and must be congratulated on their success. It will be interesting to note the result of the keen tussle between Girls’ . College and Parakino for the position of runner-up. Points arc as follow; United 30, Girls’ College 24, Parakino 24, Woolworth’s 18, Haydon’s A 18, Woollen Mills 14, D.I.C. 12, Southern Cross 12, Haydon’s B 3Un No. 2 wicket on Saturday, United met Haydon’s A, the latter team bat- ; ting first and being disposed of for 17 runs. Misses Robb (5), Neillsen (4) and Jackson (2) were tho only ones to score against the attack of Corby and : Pearce, who took four wickets for three runs apiece. United declared when they had live wickets down for 81, E. Bishop (42) and N. Bullock (20), ' being the principal scorers. O ’Shan- • nessy and K. Smith took two wickets for 29 and two for 43 respectively. In their second innings Haydon’s A did a little better but could only muster 41 runs, thus leaving United victorious by an innings and 23 runs. Corby took two wickets for seven runs, Bullock ' two for eight, and Reid three for 20. ■ This was an eight-point win for United. No. 1 wicket was occupied by Woolworth’s and Woollen Mills. Batting first, Woolworth’s were all out for 64 ; runs, Misses Coppins (26) and Bullock . (11) being the only ones to reach , double figures. B. Barnes bowled well, i taking four wickets for three runs, . Richards two for 19, Te Mana, Melville and Scott one each. Woollen Mills’ first effort reached 70 runs, Quinlia (18), Richards (12) and Scott (10) reaching double figures. Marchant was the best bowler for Woolworth’s, tak- ■ ing four wickets for 15 runs, and was i ably assisted by Miss Larsen two for , nine. Going in for a second time, Woolworth’s fared disastrously, their total reaching only 38 runs. Miss Coppans was highest scorer with nine. Scott took four wickets for one run, Barnes three for ten and Quinlin two for ten. Requiring 32 runs for an -outright win, I Woollen Mills went in for their second innigs and -obtained the runs for the loss of one wicket. Miss Clark (21) and Te Mana (8) were both not out in ' an eight-point win. Against D.1.C., Southern Cross in their first innings made the splendid ■ total of 189 for five wickets, and acclared. The chief interest in this game was the splendid score of 104 not out made by Miss A. Hodson, who was ably assisted by Miss Fifield (49). The ■ best bowler for D.I.C. was L. Lethaby, two wickets for 24. D.I.C. went in and at the call of time, had lost five wickets for 87 runs ond the match was drawn, four points eacF- Miss Cate carried her bat for a stylish innings of 54. Th e best bowlers for Southern Cross were Fifield two for 12, and Hodson one for 18. The match between Girls’ College and Haydon’s B, played on the College ground, was won outright by Girls’ Col* . ego, an eight-point win.
