UNIVERSITY FINANCE
INQUIRY BEING HELD THE MINISTER'S ACTION. [ Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, March 20. An announcement that he was making an inquiry into the finances of the New Zealand University Colleges was made by the Minister of Education (the Hon. R Masters) this afternoon. Mr Masters said that the question of university finances had engaged his consideration for some time and he had delegated an accountant of the Education Department to make an inquiry into the position. Owing to the drop in the revenue from endowments, which in most cases were farm lands, the Gov eminent had had to assist some of the university colleges in making up the difference and in two instances the drop in fees consequent on the closing of two of the training colleges had to be taken into consideration. However, he would make no decision as to what action he would take until the department had investigated the position and had furnished him with the facts. He had also directed that an inquiry should be made in the capital requirements in other branches of education during the coming financial year.
