RAETIHI

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. At the monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce there was a good attendance of members and the Mayor (Mr. W. Harris) and some of the councillors and the County chairman (Mr. C. H. Ball) were also present. Mr. W. McDowell was in the chair. Thc chairman welcomed Mr. Stanley, commercial agent of the N.Z. Railways. Mr. Stanley expressed the appreciation of the department at the assistance of the Chamber in connection with the branch line. For some time good support had been given thc line and the concessions had evidently been appreciated. The traffic had again fallen off and the road transport had been taking some of the trade that should have been given to the railway. He pointed out that thc railway had a set tariff and could not cut prices beyond a certain limit. The carriers were cutting thc rates. The settlers could not expect the line to be kept open for thc low priced freight and let the road transport have the high priced goods. It would be a serious matter for the settlers if the line was closed and they had to send their live stock by road. There would never be a large amount of traffic to and from Raetihi, but the settlers and townspeople should cooperate in seeing that sufficient traffic was forthcoming to cover the cost. The rates could not be lowered unless some guarantee was given that the railway would got all thc business. He discussed thc question of rates. Mr. Stanley answered a number of questions with regard to the freight on certain goods. He explained why sugar was carried to Wanganui from Auckland cheaper than it was taken to Ohakune. a much shorter distance. Messrs. Ingram, Fagg, Sandford, Stanley and others took part in the discussion. A resolution was passed requesting the Transport Board to hasten the putting into operation of a license for a goods service and the fixing of rates. BOWLING.
