UTIKU SPORTS Fine weather prevailed for the eighth annual sports meeting of the Utiku Sports Club, which was held on the Utiku Domain grounds on Thursday afternoon. Tho fixture attracted a large number of patrons, including many from Taibape- As usual the organisation of the sports left nothing to be desired and reflected great credit on all concerned, especially the popular and efficient secretary (Mr. S. F. Reid). Th c following were the stewards:— Horse events, Mr. L. A. Hebberd; track events, Mr. R. Beckett; miscellaneous 1 and children’s events. Mr. E. Newland; ground steward, Mr. E. C. Gibbs; gate steward, Mr. R. Potaka; golf putting, Mr. G. E. Gibbs. The horse events were judged by Mr. W. Bouck, of Pukeokahu. The open hunters’ jump was won by Mr. J. Goodwin’s “Mataroa,” with “Nurmi” second. Thc prize for the open pony jump also went to J- Goodwin, whose pony “Rajah” gave a very good performance. : The running events were keenly conI tested. some very close finishes resulting. E. Sheath, of Taihape, distinguished himself by winning the 100, 220 and 440 yards handicaps. The cycling events attracted a good deal of attention and competition was very spirited. P. O’Dea scored a popular win in the one and a-half miles event, while J. Siddle was the first man home in the mile cycle race. J. MAJESTIC THTATRE “Lctty Lynton,” Mctro-Goldwyn-Maver’s sensational screen adaption of ’ Marie Belloc Lowndes’ famous novel, will be screened at the Majestic Theatre to-night (Saturday) at two sessions, which commence at (>-4o p.m. and 9 p.m. respectively. Joan Crawford, Robert Montgomery and May Robson (who scored such “ triumph in ■•Mother’s Millions”) head the east of tho outstanding picture, which can truthfully be described as one of tho screen’s greatest triumphs. In addition to the main feature, there will be a really excellent supporting programme. Buck Jones in “The Fighting Sheriff” will be shown at to-day’s matinee in addition to a silly symphony cartoon entitled “The Clock Store. “ Letty Lvnton ” will not be shown at tho matinee. GENERAL NEWS An advertisement appears in this issue stating that thc Hui Mai Foot ball and Hockey Club (combined), will bold a modern and old-time dance in thc Three Stars Hall, Taihape, on Thursday next, February 2. The programme includes novelty dances. During one of the cycle races at the Utiku Sports on Thursday a competitor (P. O’Dea), collided with Mr. Wilson Winiata, one of the track stewards, and was thrown from his machine, sustaining a slight injury to his face. Mr. Winiata was also slightly hurt. An advertisement appears in this issue giving particulars of the services to be held at St. David’s Presbyterian Church to-morrow (Sunday).
