OBITUARY
MR M. I. HALSTED Mr Emil Isaac Halsted, whose death was reported from Dunedin this week, was born in Melbourne in 1867, and later proceeded to England with his father, Mr Bendix Hallcnstein, who was well and favourably known in the earlier business world of Dunedin. Mr Halsted arrived in New Zealand in the middle eighties, and, except for occasional visits abroad, resided continually in New Zealand from that time. He devoted his chief attention to business, and was a managing director of Hallcnstein Bros., Ltd., and chairman of directors of tho D.1.C.. Ltd., both of which firms have extensive interests in New Zealand. For many years he had been closely associated with every movement to provide better facilities for art lovers, and this year held the office of president of the Dunedin Public Art Gallery Society, having previously been a member of the council and treasurer for a number of years.. He was keenly interested in gardening, and consistently supported all efforts to increase public interest in horticulture. He was a prominent member of the Hebrew Congregation, of which ho was the treasurer for a lengthy period. He was an enthusiastic member of the old Otago Hussars, and took part in many camps at Tahuna Park. He was also a keen bowler. He was widely esteemed in business circles, and was ever ready to support movements for the promotion of the welfare of tho city and to render assistance to objects of a deserving nature. Mr Halsted married Miss R. B. Gotthelf, of Sydney, who survives him, and the family consists of a son (Air Frank Halsted, of Dunedin), and two daughters (Miss Margaret Halsted, of Dunedin, and Mrs M. J. Friedlander, of To Awamutu).
