In an effort to win New York’s 47 electoral votes, Mr Hoover came to the city to-night after brief halts throughout the day at the industrial sections in Maryland. Speaking at Madison Square Garden in New York City, he told a cheering vrowd of 22,000, that the election of Mr Roosevelt would “destroy the very foundations of the American economic and social system,” whereas his administration had overcome the depression through strict adherence to traditional principles. He spoke encouragingly of the improvements in employment and business and said that a Democratic victory would mean a lowering of the tariff and complete stagnation of industry. It was necessary to vail mounted police to handle the thousands who were unable to enter the garden. A small Communist protest demonstration was quickly dispersed.
