MARTON HARRIER CLUB P. 1' LLS-AIARTON RA CE 'Phis afternoon the Marton Harrier Club will stage as tho final run of the season a road race from Bulls to Alarton will bo competing. The race is timed to start at 2.45 p.m. sharp from the Bulls Post Office and the route taken will be via Curl’s Bridge and Crofton to the Marton Park, a circuit of which will bo made four times. The first runner is expected to arrive at the Park between 3.45 and 4 p.m. This race should prove of great in forest to the public of Alarton in view of tho fact that all thc top runners of the Wanganui Harrier (Tub, which includes those who represented the. West (‘oast Centre at thc New Zealand championships in Christchurch and tho team which won the Alarton to Wanganui relay race on Labour Day, together with tho local runners, will be taking part. It is expected that a good crowd of visitors and Incal supporters will be. following the race whilst others will assemble at the Park to see the finish. BAKER A very pleasing function eventuated in an interlude at the Catholic euchre party on Thursday evening, when Air. J. Alogridgc, on,behalf of well-wishers and. friends of Air. and Airs. W. Baker, presented them with memorable gifts prior to their departure for Taranaki. The speaker referred to the many good qualities of the departing guests, who, in their stay of six years in Alarton, had always been to the fore to help in everything for the good, of the town, and always proved a friend in need to anyone needing help or a kindly word to cheer them on. They carried with them tho best wishes of all sections of the community, and it was in appreciation of their past services that Mr. Mogridgo presented Airs. Baker with a beautiful handbag and Air. Baker with a travelling rug, to musical honours.

Baker, in responding, thanked all for their kindly thought, and assured them they would carry many pleasant memories of the happy days spent in Marton where they had made so many loyal and true friends. Ho was awarded first prize for his three-year-old Clydesdale colt “Ngaio Dene” and reserve champion. There were nine entries, including an imported horse, and the judge commented on the difficulty of his task and the excellence of thc exhibits. At a meeting of the executive of the Marton Returned Soldiers’ Association held on Wednesday, 20th. inst., it was decided to subsidise relief work with thc borough council for unemployed returned soldiers during the next standdown week. Another packed house at the Catholic euchre party on Thursday night rewarded the promoters for their efforts. Miss AL Friedrich and Air. C. Henderson carried off the prizes, which proved \ erv popular wins, consolations going to Mrs. McMillan and Mr. Daly, while the lucky competition winner was Miss R. WIDENING WING’S LINE Negotiations have been in progress for some little time for the widening of Wing’s Road. At Thursday’s meeting, finality was practically reached, and it was resolved: That the council procure the land necessary to widen Wing’s Road and offer the owner the sum of £3O for the required strip of land 25 links wide along Mr F.
