TWO GOOD GALLOPS

MIDINETTE. HUNTING CRY. On tracks that were fast after light showers overnight, the Avondale Cup candidate Hunting Cry and the three-year-old Midinette were responsible for registering the best efforts in the training operations at Avondale on Thursday morning. The outside of the course proper, with the trestles out over 60ft., furnished excellent going. Midinette, with her trainer in the saddle, and Pomp were the first to work, being sent five furlongs. They were together to the straight entrance, where Midinette began to assert herself and she came on full of running to pass the post several lengths ahead of her companion, who was loafing over the last furlongs. Pomp is very well and it is expeced that he will soon show that he has not been seen at his best in his recent outings, states the New Zealand Herald. It is apparent, that Midinette has got through a lot of work, for she looks as if she will be fit enough to win first up if she is good enough, and for a classic winner it really will be surprising if she fails in the Champion Plate. She ran her five furlongs on Thursday in the smart time of 1.5 3-5 and the fact that she was travelling well after traversing the final thre furlongs in 39 2-ss, suggests that she has lost, none of her brilliance. This filly’s run in the Champion Plate should improve her considerably for the Guineas on Monday. A rattling good gallop by Hunting Cry was one of the features of the morning’s work. He jumped off a bit short of the mile barrier, and timed from the seven furlongs he cut out the next quarter in 25 2-5 s and the three in 395. Up the straight he was moving very smoothly to return 1.33 for the seven furlongs and he was galloping so generously that it seemed as if he could have knocked a bit off these figures. Hunting Cry’s successful outing at Napier Park seems to have been just what was required to sharpen him up, for he looks as well as ever. He pulled no quite sound and his trainer stated afterwards that there was every probability that he would fulfil his Cup engagement. On Thurday’s trial it is going to take a really good horse to beat him.
