HOCKEY

REPRESENTATIVE TEAMS PLAYERS FOR TO-DAY WELLINGTON AND WANGANUI To-day’s hockey games in Wanganui should be the best of the season. Grounds uie in first-class order and indications are that teams are even.';, matched. At 1.45 p.m. Star ladies’ A play off with Old Girls’ A for the championship, and at the same time the best of the juniors will be given a try-out against a senior team. At 3 p.m. Wellington will play Wanganui* In the representative fixtures hockey is to be the order of the day. Wanganui men are not so much looking for a win as for putting up a good showing. Hockey can. to a certain degree, be played only as well as opponents allow, but with Wellington and Wanganui to-day the game should be well worth seeing.

Those in Representative Goals Both goal-keepers have bad many years of representative hockey. T. AGuy., who will be in the Wellington net, has played in both Wellington and Nelson. He is considered to be one of the best in New Zealand for the position and plays for the Wellington Club. N. Hughes. Wanganui’s goal-keeper, is one of the older hands of the game in Wanganui, turning out for the Hinemoa Club. So far this season, as his team won the sienioi I championship, he has not been tried I out to any extent. As a goal-keeper he is the best in Wanganui hockey. Who the Backs Are Wellington ’s backs will be L. Avery (left), and J. D. Gray (right). Avery is the biggest in the touring team and plays a sound defensive game. He is a Wellington Club player, while his team-mate is a member of the Hutt Club. He has been playing brilliant hockey and has been selected to play in all Wellington representative games this season. For Wanganui G. Young, Hinemoa Club player, and A. Lc Brun, Old Boys’ Club member, will be opposing the Wellington forwards. Le Brun has in recent games struck form, and the display he put up last Saturday was one of his best this season. Young has long been regarded as one of the dependables of the Hinemoa team, and his defensive work ha? meant much in club games. Halves and Their Play In Wellington’s half line W. Worsfold, at centre, is the outstanding player in the Wellington, sub-associa-tion, Horowhcnua. He went to Australia in 1927. He is a hard worker and is playing as well as ever. I. Nimmo (right), is a member of the Karori Club senior team. He has been in the representative team on several occasions. Both are old hands. H. A. Pyle, left half, is captain of the Wellington Wesley seniors. He is clever and has had several seasons with Wellington representatives. Wanganui’s halves will be Jardino of Old Bovs, W. Bannin of Hinemoa and A. Howatson of Hinemoa. Of these Bannin. at centre, is the only old representative player. Although Jardine has the advantage of years, his appearance in Wanganui hockey, after a spell from the game, is only recent. His defence gained him the place. Howatson, on the other hand, is the baby of the team as far as age goes. He has been playing excellent, hockey, and would have probably had a place in last year’s representative team had he not been so young. Wllington’s Forwards Last night a definite selection could not be made for the visiting forward line. The van will be chosen from: Freer. Stewart. Phillips, Fergusson, Wahren and Jeromson. L. S. Freer, on the right wing, has all the speed of a wing, centres well, and has also had the advantage of several seasons* play in England. F. H. Stewart is a young ’Varsity Club player who can take the half or forward position. L. V. Phillips, a young member of *ho Hutt senior team, played representative hockey both this season and last. He is reputed to carry a dangerous scoring stick in the circle. T. A. Ferguson captains the Y.M.C.A. senior team. He is reputed to be the best centre-forward playing in Wellington this season. He is a good scoring man. W. Wahren plays left wing for the Karori senior team. This is his first season in senior hockey, but his nlay has justified the promotion. A. Jeromson, Karori’s inside right, hn.s had some experience playing for Wellington. and is as strong a player as ; over. The Wanganui Van I Wanganui’s forward line will be: Latham, Mclntyre, Oldridge. Tizard and Thrush. V. Latham, Star Club player, has been previously a member of a Wanganui side. He tackles well and is not afraid to combine. Mclntyre. an old player and captain of the Old Boys’ senior team, plays n. bustling f vpe of game and is inclined to. follow the ball. He shoots strongly. B. H. Oldridge. at centre, is the best hockey player in Wanganui whore science is concerned. He has excellent stick work and is dangerous when nearing *he circle. He plays for the Y.M.C.A. team. R. Tizard (inside left), of Star Club , is a player with a deal of ex- ' perionco behind him and has been in • a Wanganui side on many occasions, i He is a good scoring man, tricky in | (he field, and always draws his opponent before sending the ball on. W. Thrush, captain of the Wesley Club seniors, is a. player who has done well in club hockey. Ho is very quick in the circle, has a good eye, a serviceable amount of speed and has fine stick work.
