VON HIPPER DEAD
LINK WITH SCARBOROUGH. The man who bombarded Scarborough and Hartlepools during the war, recently died in Germany. He is Admiral von Hipper, who led the German battle cruiser squadron at the battle of Jutland. Von Hipper was in command of the German raiding force which bombarded Scarborough and Hartlepools in 1914. On January 24, 1915, he made another attempt, but was interrupted at the Dogger Bank by the then ViceAdmiral Beatty, and in a running fight the German battle cruiser Blucher was sunk. It was also Beatty whom von Ripper had to face at the Battle of Jutland. Seventeen years have passed since the Scarborough bombardment. It was eight o’clock on a dull misty morning when the explosion of the first shell alarmed the townspeople. For twenty minutes the firing was incessant. Then the raiders made off. The damage that was done left its mark on the town for many years. The uuper floors of the Grand Hotel were in ruins, the light in the harbour was demolished, and other prominent buildings in the South Bay were hit.
About a hundred civilians were killed and four hundred injured at Scarborough and the Hartlepools as a result of the raid.
