The game was fast and full of spirit, the Rata boys eventually winning by 3 to nil. Basketball will soon be in full swing. Wireless. Reception, of late, has been shocking, and night after night, through power line noise; local aerial sets have had to close down. At the moment of writing, the noise is abominable, but despite letters and complaints, the powers that be will do nothing to eliminate trouble. Ruta wireless enthusiasts arc certainly not getting value for their annual license fee. It looks like a case of all take and no give. The fault is, 1 believe, caused through a leak in the transformer. As a flame may, at times, be seen issuing from this, the theory advanced is possibly correct. Others maintain that the power line was only a temporary job in the first place. Whatever the cause, tho effect is disastrous and most, annoying, and calls for immediate attention. Dance. The Girls’ Hockey Club, with a view to augmenting funds, held a dance and card evening in the hall on Wednesday last. RoM Safety. The school was visited by Patrolman Dowling, of the Wanganui Automobile Association, on Friday, June 10. The illustrated lecture was of intense interest and importance. Patrolman Dowling has the happy knack of being able to talk to children, who were keen to know when he was to come back. Tho safety rules were well drilled home, and the following of these should make the roadway safer for both pedestrian and motorist. One rule advocated

and which, I believe, is not well known to users of the road, is that 1 , where there is no footpath, pedestrians should walk on the right hand side of the road so that they may be in full view of the approaching motorist, and so that they, themselves, may see the oncoming motor. This advocated rule has raised quite a little local contro versy. If motorist and pedestrian are educated alike with regard to this rule, everything will be well, but if not, who pays? Ladies’ Hockey. Rata, v. United.—h’ata again suffered defeat when United, who has not been beateu this season, won by two goals to one. The game was played at, Rata last Wednesday before a fair attendance of spectators, and they were not, disappointed, because the local girls worried the loaders of the competition and wit h a bit of luck they won hl have made a draw of the game. United scored their two goals early in the first spell per Misses Staples and McDonald, through good combined play. In the second spell Rata excelled themselves and repeatedly had United fighting l ard to save their goal, when from one of these hot attacks Aliss P. Kane scored Rata’s only goal. Rata had a chance of equalising about ten min utes from time when Alisses Kane and

P. Iwikau cleverly put Rata into attacking position, Miss Iwikau centreing to Miss Signal, with only the goalie to beat, but a bump deflected the ball and Miss Signal and a sure goal went begging. The Rata girls must be con gratulated on their fine performance against their strong opponents, and with more combination and understanding amongst tho halves and forwards, and also quick accurate shooting they will be a hard team to beat. United show'cd good combination and their stick work was very clever. PERSONAL. Arthur O’Brien, younger son of Mr. and Mrs. W. O’liricn underwent an operation for appendicitis on Wednesday. He is making satisfactory pro Neil (“Buster’’) Gordon, son of Mr. ami Airs. R. A. Gordon, who underwent serious operations in Wharc Ora Hospital on Monday night is progressing as well as can be expected.
