“CYCLES A LUXURY” DEALER’S FAILURE ALL CREDITORS UNSECURED A deficiency of £297 8s was revealed to creditors of Reginald H. Crutchley, bankrupt cycle dealer of Patea, when they met at Hawera yesterday before Mr. R. S. Sage, official assignee. The total liabilities amount to £307 8s 3d, all showing to unsecured creditors. Assets, comprising book debts, are valued at £lO. The principal creditors are: New Zealand Loan Company (Hawera), £5 3s Is; Skeate and White (Auckland), £ll 0s 8d; Stewart Forsyth (Waitotara), £2O; A.B.N.Z. Alotors (Wanganui), £100; T. Roberts (Patea), £11; G. Signal (Patea), £5 2s; Phelan and Lonsdale, Ltd. (Wellington), £8 15s; Chaincy Bros. (Wanganui), £66 13s 7d : H. R. Kemp (Hawera), £3O; Cunningham Bros. (Waverley), £ll 5s lOd; Egmont Trade Association (Hawera), £2O.

Until about three years ago he was employed by Fernie’s, of Wanganui, which firm had a branch in Patea. stated bankrupt. When the business was sold to Chainoy Bros., the Patea branch closed down, and as he was out of employment he took over the busi ness himself. Fernie’s sold him a little stock on terms and Chaincy Bros, stocked up tho shop with cycles, which he sold on commission. For a time bankrupt was able to make a living, but with tho advent of financial stringency bicycles became more or less r luxury line, with the result that business fell off considerably. Ho endeavoured to keep going, but his rent was in arrears and he borrowed money to satisfy his landlord, who eventually distrained and he was forced to walk out with nothing. He went to Wanganui, but the only work he had received since Christmas was some canvassing for a cycle firm. Aa judgment summons was issued against him by the Egmont Trade Association for costs due in connection with accounts placed for collection, and he had been forced to file in bankruptcy. Answering tho assignee, bankrupt said the only books he kept were a day book and ledger. The bank pass-book showed all disbursements, but not all takings as some of tho receipts were used for household purposes. He did not gamble on tho turf and rarely en tered hotels. Ho was separated from his wife, to whom he paid 25s a week maintenance. The £2O ho owed the Egmont Trade Association was for collecting accounts. The assignee remarked that the association appeared in several cases to have charged costs where amounts were not recovered.

Bankrupt said ho had complained of this at the time. He had not received a cheque from the association nor had he collected any book debts since go ing out of business. When he attended .football matches he received contributions from the players he tramfported.
