WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT WESTMERE The .Tune meeting was held In the Westmere Hall on Tuesday afternoon', Mrs. Lambert presiding over a good attendance of members and friends. Afore new members were welcomed by the president- A fair amount of bu sines- had to be dealt with. It was decided to hold an open social evening on Saturday, June 25, at the Westmere Hall, for members and their friends. Hostesses and social committees were arranged and an enjoyable time is being looked forward to. The members were in favour of card parties being held fortnightly in conjunction with the Westmere Hall committee. The next was arranged to take place this evening (June lfi). Reference was made to the passing of one of the first members and the tragic circumstances that surrounded her family. The meeting stood in silence as a mark of respect. Mrs. Birch’s recent resignation from the committee was mentioned and the president proposed that it be placed on record the good work done by Mrs. Birch since the institute was formed. This was seconded by Mrs. Brownlie, and carried. Mrs. Miller gave a report on the group meeting held last month. Mrs. Short, of Cheltenham, gave a very interesting demonstration in glove mak ing. Many members being keen. it was agreed to form a glove circle. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mrs. Short by Mrs. Remington. After this a social chat and afternoon tea was greatly enjoyed by everyone. The trading tables were opened for 15 min ntes, the usual brisk business -being done. Following this was a violin solo by Miss Edith Smith, which was ! loudly applauded. A roll call of ‘‘The Job I Dislike Most, ’ caused great amusement. Cleaning stoves and flues seemed to be the pet aversion of many housewives. A community sing lead by Mrs. V. Wilson was entered into with good spirit by everyone. The glee circle has been formed and the first practice will be held next Monday, in the tVestmere Hall. All members of the Institute are welcome to attend. An amusing competition of motor car names was won by Miss Joyce Smith and Mrs. Wilson was second. The Institute’s lone member. Mrs. Howie, of Te Tuhi, paid the meeting a visit, and was greatly welcomed. Among other visitors were members from the newly-formed Maxwell Institute. The singing of . the National Anthem brought a happy meeting to a close. The hostesess for the afternoon were Mesdames Curie. Sherriff, Henry, Robert, Taylor and Misses R. and J. Campbell.
