Salmon, 8.M., at the Magistrate’s Court at Wanganui yesterday morning when sentencing Richard Voyce, a wharf labourer, to 14 days’ imprisonment. Voyce was charged with assaulting Constable Willetts in the execution of his duty and with a second offence of drunkenness. Senior-Sergeant A. D. McLean said that accused was a wild individual when under the influence of liquor. He had not been getting wor]| on the waterfront for some time and so he had gone to see the stevedore, Mr T. M. Lovegrove, at the latter’s private house. Mr. Lovegrove had been ill for some time and he had not been engaging labour on the waterfront. He asked accused to go away and promised that he would do something for him. Accused betaine unpleasant and Mr. Lovegrove cnßed in Constable Willetts, who took accused into the street and told him to go on home. While the constable was getting on his bicycle accused came up and hit him a powerful blow from behind. Accused said that he had been worried, and pleaded guilty. Imprisonment was imposed on the' major charge and a discharge was given with regard 1 to ihc second offence of drunkenness.
