“FAILURE OF CAPITALISM”

Sir,—In your issue of the 14th. inst. there is a contribution by the New Zealand Welfare League upon the “Failure of Capitalism.” The writer states that the failure of capitalism is not only a parrot cry of the Socialists but that it. is also nonsense. Can tho Welfare League look round and see the condition of this Dominion and honestly say they are satisfied with the result of years of capitalism? A few pertinent questions may be asked:— 1. —What, system causes the majority of wars? 2. —What system allows monopolies ■ind sweating? 3. —Whether it is right or just that in a country where necessary foodstuffs are in abundance and tied up, thousands of our fellow beings are on charitable aid or on the verge of starvation? 4. —ls it right- that in these times of distress a now post, should be added to the expense of tho country? 5. —Something radically has failed and what remedy doos the league propose to put things right? Undoubtedly, the system based on finance has collapsed and surely, Mr Editor, something could be tried, even though it. is called Socialism. I do not. approve of extremists in any party whether die-hard Tory or the violent Communist, hut wo can all see ♦ hat the party system in polities has failed as well ns tho capitalistic system in commerce. The solution lies in ♦he calling together of tho best, brains of the country nnd to institute a commercial system more favourable to nil than to the few. Above nil, we require mon and women who have enough patriotism to put their country first and their own requirements second. Yours faithfully. M ARCUS J AMES.
