Flying-Officer lan Keith left Wanganui yesterday for New Plymouth, where he will continue flying instruction. The Rev. Wilma Constable. Unitarian minister of Auckland, is the guest of Mrs. G. Hall, Patterson Street. Aramoho. He is to address pupils of the Friends’ School, St. John’s Hill, this morning. Members of the College Street School Committee, Palmerston North, have resolved to support the nomination of their chairman, Colonel J. H. Whyte, for the vacant seat on the Wanganui Education Board. Tho Chief Commissioner for the StJohn Ambulance Brigade in New Zealand has approved of the appointment of Dr. Walter H. Brcmner, F-R.C.S. (Eng.) as Divisional Surgeon of the Christchurch Ambulance Division. Guests at Foster’s Hotel last night included: Messrs 11. P. Toose, R. P. Levein, G. T. Mason, W. I. McCallum, F. H. Vincent, Eric 11. Lund and C. Lamberg (Wellington); C. A. Harries and M. T. Trafford (Gisborne); Mr and Mrs Gordon Syke (New Plymouth).

At yesterday’s meeting of the Patea County Council the chairman (Cr. W. G. Belton) and Cr. R. J. Watt were elected as representatives to attend a conference of counties in the Nos. 8 and 9 highways districts, on the matter of the reduction of county employees’ wages. Mr W. G. Belton was unanimously re-elected to the chairmanship of the Patea County Council at its meeting yesterday. In thanking the council for thus showing appreciation of his work during the past three years, Cr. Belton welcomed the only new councillor elected at tho recent ballot, Cr. ID. Hurley. Sergeant Jack Grant, who is one of the few New Zealand holders of the Victoria Cross, won in the Great War, is at present in Hastings, and is employed as foreman by the Fletcher Construction Company in connection with the re-building of the Hastings Post Office. He was engaged in a similar capacity on the Municipal Theatre reconstruction.

Guests at the Rutland Hotel include the following:—Mr. J. F. Pyne, Mr. Harry Anderson, Mr. H. B. Hanson, Mr. N. C. Armitage, Mr. H. P. Toose, Mr- C. Mitchell, and Mr. A. D. Kinley (Wellington), Mr. G. A. Shaw and Mr. W. Aldred (Auckland), Mr. E. B. Pearson (Melbourne), Mr. Tulloch (Pahiatua), and Mr. R. D. Hardie (Palmerston North).

Mr. A. Hickford, Raurimu, has been hnominated as a candidate for the North Ward of the Wanganui Education Board district. Mr. Hickford is an ex-meinl er of the. board, having previously represented the Wanganui urban area. He has also sat on the Board of Governors of the Wanganui Girls’ College and was at one time chairman of the Victoria Avenue School Committee. At present h 6 is chairman of the Raurimu School Committ.ee. Captain R. K. (Ross) Clark, aged 43, died suddenly on Monday from heart failure, says a message from Tauranga. Deceased was for several years in the Union Steamship Company and was in command of the Manuka when she was lost at Long Point, south of Dunedin, about three years ago. He then retired from tho sea and went to Tauranga, where he established a fish curing business which he had conducted ever since. He leaves a widow and two daughters. On the eve of his departure with the All Black team to Australia, Mr. A. Bullock-Douglas was the recipient of a presentation by the local stall of the National Bank yesterday after noon. Mr. Sealy, in making the presentation, referred to the esteem in which Mr. Bullock-Douglas was held by his fellow officers and also to the fact that his head office had expressed their gratification at Mr. BullockDouglas’ selection. On behalf of the staff he wished him every luck and a successful tour.
