AUSTRALIA AND U.S.A. DEFEAT OF THE TOURISTS CRAWFORD’S FINE EFFORT (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) Received May 29, 5.5 p.m. PHILADELPHIA, May 28. The games in the final round of tho Davis Cup matches in the North American zone began yesterday between Australia and the United States at Philadelphia Country Club. F. X. Shields (U.S.A.) beat H. O. Hopman (Australia) 6—4, 6—l, 6—2.

In the match between E. Vines (U.S.A.) and J. C. Crawford (Australia), unfinished because of rain, Vines was leading 6 —2, 6—4, 2—6, 3 —“3.

Crawford served and lost in the first game of his match against Vines. The wind, if anything, had freshened, and gave the balls very uncertain direction. The score was even at 3-all, when the American lost service in the sixth game.

A rapid thunder shower then developed, and the match was abandoned for the day.

Resuming to-day Vines defeated Crawford, taking the fourth set 6 —4. In the doubles Van Ryn and Allison defeated Crawford and Hopman 6 —o, 6—4, 5—7, 7—5.

Crawford went promptly into the lead at 4—3 with the resumption of the match but. quickly lapsed into errors and dropped the next two games in tho series, nets and outs giving the American a one-game superiority, which he later capitalised on his own service in the tenth for victory. Ho was match point twice before clinching matters on placement from his backhand stroke. INTERNATIONAL PLAY AMERICANS AT PARIS. Received May 29, 5.5 p.m. 'PARIS, May 29. In tho Paris championships, Mrs. Wills-Moody and Miss Ryan defeated Mrs. Whittingstall and Miss Nuthall, tho holders, 6—l, 6—3 in the semifinals. Coe-het and Brugnon defeated Perry and Oliff. 6—3, B—6, 3—6, 6—3. Boussus and Bernard defeated Borotra and Gentien, 6—2, 6—l, 10—8. In the semi-finals of the women’s doubles, Mrs. Helen Wills-Moody and Miss Ryan beat Senorita Dalvarez and Mlle. Sigart, 6—4, I—6, 6—4; Mrs. Whittingstall and Miss Nuthall beat Madame Mathieu and Mlle. Rosambert, 6—3, 6—4.
