SUNDAY SHOWS

BRITISH GOVERNMENT BILL [ British Official Wireless. ] RUGBY, May 27. The Government’s Sunday Entertainments Bill received a second reading in the House of Commons to-day by 237 votes to 61. The new Bill, which is a compromise measure, legalises Sunday concerts and the Sunday opening of such places as picture galleries and zoos. It permits Sunday cinemas for London and other areas which had Sunday cinemas under special conditions before 1930. It provides that other areas may proceed by a special Draft Order for permission to open cinemas on Sunday, but the Order can only become effective if supported by the majority of the inhabitants in the area concerned. Local authorities are

to require that the profits to be derived from Sunday opening shall be devoted to charities and that a day’s rest for employees shall be guaranteed.
