UNLUCKY OWNER FORBIDDEN THE DERBY. LONDON, May 5. Because the excitement might produce a fatal relapse, Mr. Washington Singer, a member of the Jockey Club, has been forbidden to watch the Derby, in which his Golden Hair colt Orwell, the winner of seven successive races, is strongly fancied. It has boon Mr. Singer’s life ambition to win the Derby. He has been ill for a year, and has never seen Orwell win. ON TRENTHAM TRACKS SATURDAY’S GALLOPS. SOME USEFUL EFFORTS. The weather and track conditions at Trentham continue to be ideal for working, and most of the horses with engagements at Otaki next week were sent along against tfco watch on Saturday morning, writes “Rangalira” in the Evening Post. The outside of the course proper was availagle and provided excellent going after a surface frost.

Cape Fair (R. G. Bush) finished just in front o£ Cape of Good Hope (ti. F. Dick) at the end of three furlongs in 38 l-ssec. The latter is a big typo oi a horse who may do well next season. Vitaphone (J. Gunn) and Capo Paraki (W. E. Shand) hopped off together at the seven furlongs and ran to the furlong post. Cape Paraki, for whose benefit the gallop was mainly undertaken, compounded in the straight, Vitaphone completing the task well ahead in Imin. 19sec. The first two furlongs had taken 25sec., both horses going well at the half-mile.

It was found afterwards that Cape Paraki had had a slight touch of staggers (the result usually of pressure, often from the gear being too tight, causing congestion of the brain). The gelding has never been so touched before, and it is not expected that the malady will make a reappearance. Eminent (S. Wilson) finished two lengths in front of Lavington (R. J. Mackie) at the end of five furlongs in Imin. 4 3-sscc., the last half-mile, in 51 l-ssec.

Royal Game (W. H. Jones) ran an easy mile, coming home from the half mile in 54sec.

Flower (Wilson) did an easy six fur longs in Imin 21 3-ssec., the last half mile in 52 4-ssec.

Azure (A. Leach) slipped over half a mile attractively in 49sec., a good effort for a maiden.

Joie de Vai (Shand), going easily, was kept with Miss Hastings (Dick) through their mile in Imin 49sec., the last half-mile requiring 53 3-ssec. Tobaccoland (Wilson) again went attractively in reeling off seven furlongs alone in Imin 31 3-ssec., the final half-mile in 52 3-sscc.

Waratah (A. Jenkins) was three or four lengths too good for Araios (H. Hawkins) over five tunongs In ]min--3 2-ssec., the last half-mile in 50 4-ssec.

Cockpen (Jones) and New Era (Dick) ran half a mile in 51 2-ssec. Aroma (Mackie) sprinted down the straight. Bright Song (Ma<|.ic) left Forestry (H Fleet) at the closing part of half 8 mile in 51 4-ssec.

Pahu (Hawkins') jumped the three schooling fences perfectly, then did a solid round of half-pace work on the sand.

H. B. Lorigan leaves for Auckland on his way to Sydney and Melbourne, at the beginning of the week. He will be taking Waratah, Cockpen and Lavington with him. At the Otaki meeting S. Wilson will be riding Purse, Flower, and Eminent, and K. Hawkins will be on Pahu Araios, and probably Guerestor. AUSTRALIAN RACING WARWICK FARM FIXTURE. TIMOROUS WINS AGAIN. Received May 29, 5.5 p.m. SYDNEY, May 29. At the Warwick Farm races the St. John's Park Nursery Handicap resulted: Timorous (N.Z.) 7.13 (Bartie) 1, Highboy 6.11 (Britt)’ 2, High Molly 8.4 (Cook) 3. Thirteen startcL Neck; two lengths. Time, 1.14. NOTES AND COMMENTS Chide Beaten. At the Tattersall’s (Sydney) meeting on May 14, at which the New Zealandbred Diamond de Rogue was successful in the Two-year-old Handicap, the principal cvc'nt, the James Baines Stakes, was won by Troilus (Redfern —Etra Malt) 7.12, by half a length from Exact (7.7), who beat Chide (9.13) by a long head, the mile and three furlongs taking 2min. 21sec. Chide, who was piloted by J. Pike, was second favourite to Rogerson, ridden by R. Reed. Diamond do Rogue was, like Aladdin, bred by Mr. G. Carrington at Gisborne, and arc closely related, the former being by Hunting Song from Perle de Rogue (Polydamon—Perle d’Or), a sister to Etoile d’Or, dam of Aladdin. A Good Hack.

Woodful is a good sort of a hack, and one that will be seen to further advantage before the season’ is through. He has raced consistently since ho made his first, appearance at the Matamata meeting last February, when he won. On Saturday last he was well supported for the Whitiora Handicap at Te Rapa and, after waiting on the loader till the straight, took charge, to score easily. Woodful is engaged at the Great Northern meeting. Lord Astor’s Luck Lord Astor is the champion unlucky owner in a Derby connection. lie has never won the event, but. he |lovided the runner-up in 1916 with Blink, in 1919 with Buchan, in 1921 with Craig

an Eran, in 1922 with Tamar, and in 1924 with St. Germans. His colt, Mannamead, who was much fancied for this year’s race, wont amiss ami had to forfeit his engagement.
